What does Water Resistant really mean?

This is one of our most frequently asked questions... So hopefully below it has been explained clearly for you. You will often see Water Resistant in the specs section of many watches and pedometer descriptions. If you don't see it., it generally means that IT IS NOT water resistant at all - so keep the unit well away from any water!

We have sourced this article from Tech4O, as who would be better to explain it then a professional watch manufacturer.;)

Water Resistant 30m/50m/100m/200m are common marks put on watches to indicate how well a watch is sealed against water intrusion.

The meter value does not relate to a diving depth as commonly believed, but to the air pressure that a sample of newly manufactured watches was exposed to in the course of a standard leakage test (ISO 2281).

An indication of the test pressure in terms of water depth does not mean a water resistant watch was designed for repeated long term use in such water depths.

A 30m water resistant watch can’t be expected to withstand long periods in a swimming pool, or to continue to function at 30 meters under water. This is because the test is conducted only once using static pressure – it doesn’t take into account the rapid or repeated changes in pressure that occur with swimming or diving, sudden temperature changes, or the age of the watch.

So, how can you select a watch that is best suited to your activites?

Here are some helpful definitions of water resistance classifications for non-diving watches as they relate to ISO 2281:
  • NO DECLARATION:  This model is NOT water resistant. Any water contact should be avoided.

  • WATER RESISTANT:  This model is resistant to minor and accidental splashes. Greater water contact should be avoided

  • WATER RESISTANT 30m (3 ATM / 100 Feet):  Suitable for everyday use. Splash/rain resistant. NOT suitable for swimming, snorkeling, water related work and fishing. NOT suitable for diving.

  • WATER RESISTANT 50m (5 ATM / 160 Feet):  Suitable for swimming & white water rafting. NOT suitable for snorkeling, water related work and fishing. NOT suitable for diving.

  • WATER RESISTANT 100m (10 ATM / 300 Feet):  Suitable for recreational surfing, swimming, snorkeling, sailing
and water sports. Not suitable for water related work and fishing.  NOT suitable for diving

  • WATER RESISTANT 200m (20 ATM / 650 Feet):  Suitable for professional marine activity and serious surface water sports and scuba diving. NOT suitable for deep water  diving.
